Data Management and Data Exploration

In many current applications of database and information systems, problems for data management and data exploration occur. Examples from technical and scientific domains include molecular and systems biology, medical imaging, diagnostics and treatment, CAD databases for mechanical engineering, telecommunications and so forth. For all these applications, the complexity as well as the huge amount of objects are limiting factors that affect the efficiency of performing required data mining tasks. We face these challenges by developing new multidimensional access methods, algorithms for multi-step query processing as well as geometric and structural approximation techniques.

	ICDE 2010: Outstanding Reviewer Award		22.11.2009
		Prof. Dr. Thomas Seidl and the co-reviewers from his group will receive the Outstanding Reviewer Award of the IEEE 26th International Conference on Data Engineering (ICDE 2010), to be held on March 1-6th, 2010, in Long Beach, CA, USA. As the first database conference ever, ICDE 2010 announced an award for the highest-quality reviews on full research papers. Based on a normalized measure of the authors' feedback about the quality of their paper's reviews, the PC chairs selected 20 out of the 230 reviewers on the Program Committee for the award.
	BTW 2009 Dissertationspreis		06.03.2009
		Frau Dr. Ira Assent hat auf der 13. GI-Fachtagung für Datenbanksysteme in Business, Technologie und Web (BTW 2009) den von der IBM Deutschland gestifteten Dissertationspreis des GI-Fachbereichs Datenbanken und Informationssysteme erhalten. Ira Assent hat Ihre Dissertation zum Thema "Efficient adaptive retrieval and mining in large multimedia databases" am Lehrstuhl für Informatik 9 (Datenmanagement und -exploration) erstellt. Seit September 2008 ist sie Assistenzprofessorin am Department for Computer Science und Center for Data-intensive Systems (Daisy) der Universität Aalborg in Dänemark.
	BTW 2009 Studierendenpreis		06.03.2009
		Herr Sergej Fries hat auf der 13. GI-Fachtagung für Datenbanksysteme in Business, Technologie und Web (BTW 2009) im Rahmen des Studierendenprogramms den von der SAP AG gestifteten Studierendenpreis für den besten studentischen Beitrag erhalten. Seinen Beitrag mit dem Titel "Bestimmung des optimalen Verzweigungsgrades hierarchischer Anytime-Klassifikatoren" hat er im Rahmen seiner Diplomarbeit am Lehrstuhl für Informatik 9 (Datenmanagement und -exploration) erarbeitet.
